What’s Really in Your Tap Water? | November 2025

“Clean doesn’t always mean pure.”
When you turn on the tap, it’s easy to take that clear water for granted.
Across Yorkshire, our water is safe to drink but what’s inside it changes from place to place more than most people realise.
From the minerals that make water “hard” or “soft,” to the pH balance that affects how it feels on your skin, every glass tells a slightly different story.

A Few Things You Might Not Know
Yorkshire’s water is naturally mineral-rich, which is why you sometimes see a white powdery layer on your kettle or shower head that’s limescale.
These same minerals slowly build up inside your pipes, radiators, and boiler, making your system work a little harder each year.
Hard water isn’t bad for your health, but it can be tough on your home especially your heating system.
If you’re curious, Yorkshire Water publishes regional data where you can check the hardness level in your area.
Simple Things You Can Do
You don’t need to overhaul anything to take small, smart steps toward better water quality:
Descale your kettle or shower head every few weeks to keep surfaces clean.
Run your heating system for 20 minutes once a week during winter — it helps reduce mineral build-up in standing water.
If you notice frequent limescale, especially around taps or radiators, it may be time to test your home’s water balance.
For homes in harder-water areas, there are ways to gently balance the minerals in your system so they don’t build up as quickly — something we’ll explore in our next newsletter.
Small habits like these can help your heating system run smoother, last longer, and save a bit of energy over time.
The Takeaway
Water is something we all share but every home feels it differently.
The more we understand what’s flowing through our taps, the easier it becomes to keep our systems healthy and efficient.
If you’d like us to check your local water type or point you toward easy home tests, just reply with your postcode, we’re always happy to help.
Stay curious. Stay warm. Stay ahead this winter.
